The provision of a new 42 bed ward block at Sligo University Hospital will significant progress in the coming months.
It's expected that the contract for the ward will be awarded in the second quarter of the year, with construction planned for later in 2024.
The construction is expected to take 30 months to complete with the development consisting of two 21 bed wards with single en suite rooms.
Local Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan raised the matter in the Dail this week, calling on the HSE to ensure no further delays in the process.
The Hospital is consistently one of the most overcrowded in the country according to daily INMO figures.
Deputy Feighan has urged the Department of Health to begin recruitment ahead of time to ensure the beds can be opened.
