It's hoped that a route through south Roscommon and on into Galway for the Dublin-Galway greenway will be identified before Christmas.
The lead engineer in charge of the project says there has been a lot of consultation over the past year after 5 route options were published.
Michael Kelly says the aim is to use as much public land as possible for the route but some private landowners will also be involved.
He says they've been talking to the landowners in the areas concerned in recent months and they hope a route that everyone could agree on may be published before the end of the year:
