It's hoped that a new Blueway in Leitrim could begin construction in 2025.
A public consultation process is currently underway for the 11km project that will link Carrick-on-Shannon to Leitrim village via a new four metre wide path n the banks of the River Shannon.
Planning has to be submitted to An Bord Pleanana and a decision is only expected by the summer of 2024.
funding for the project has only been secured so far to bring the project through planning and an application will then be required for construction costs.
Senior Engineer with Leitrim County Council Shay O Connor admits settling on a timeline for the project is tricky.
" We are not giving any definite decisions on our recommendations on how long it will be, we will get through Bord Pleanana and hopefully the idea is if we get through that by mid 2024 we will be ready then subject to obviously."
"We only have secured planning to bring us through the planning process but once got the planning we have great belief that we will be able to begin contruction which in best case senario would start in 2025."
