Physical works on the Carrick on Shannon Flood Defence scheme will not begin until 2024 at the earliest.
According to OPW Minister Patrick O'Donovan, the best case scenario will see shovels in the ground during the first quarter of 2024.
The Minister visited Carrick On Shannon yesterday as part of the Local Authority Flood Forum, where he met with members of Leitrim County Council and residents in the affected areas.
Consultants for the plan were appointed in 2020, and a public consultation has taken place.
Two more consultations are due to take place over the next year, with planning permission also due to be submitted.
