It's hoped that Longford town and its surrounds will have access to high speed broadband by the end of next year.
The surveying works for the National Broadband Plan have been completed in the county - with the design of the roll out now underway.
Councillors at the February meeting of the local authority were told that up over 2500 householders and businesses within 20km of the town centre will be connected first to the fibre broadband plan next year - with the roll out of the plan costing €34m.
The fibre will be laid from a regional centre based in the county town and extended with out to a 20km radius according to an official from the NBI who made a detailed presentation to local councillors.
The design of the network will take between eight and ten weeks and after approval by the Department the build will begin afterwards.
Ducts will also be cleaned as well as poles being replaced with the cable then being installed on poles and the fibre being connected.
Over 8600 premises are waiting for high speed broadband in the county - representing almost 40% of all premises in the county which require internet access.
