Longford County Council has confirmed major road works that have been underway over the last two years will be completed in 2024.
The works are part of the National Sustainable Mobility Policy 'Pathfinder' scheme programme and are fully funded by the National Transport Authority.
The Battery Road on the R198 and the Ballinalee/Major Well's Road on the N63 in Longford have been subject to resurfacing works since August.
€2.6 million was spent on rehabilitation works of the Battery Road surface, which stretches from the Retail Park Roundabout for approximately 700 metres ending between St Albans and Longford Garda Station.
The project also includes the installation of traffic lights at the Lisbrack Road junction, the construction of right turning lanes at the entrance to Abbeycarton Lane and the Demesne, installation of new public lighting, as well as the creation of cycle tracks and footpaths on both sides of the road.
Currently, the traffic management for the duration of the project will involve a combination of lane narrowing, stop / go systems and temporary traffic lights.
Meanwhile, €1.75 million was spent on the N63 Ballinalee Road project, which includes the continuation of the cycle and pedestrian works, which were completed earlier this year.
The N63 Ballinalee Road project covers a zone starting from the Templemichael Terrace junction with the N63, out to the roundabout on the N4.
A new footpath is also being installed on the northern side of the road.
Existing footpaths will remain in place on the other side, while junctions along the road are being made safer to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists, with a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing being included at the N4 end.
According to the local authority, the works will be completed next year.
