The development of a new facility for the St. Teresa's Special School in Ballinasloe will take up to 5 years to become operational.
The school has been allocated a new four-acre site close to its current location for the construction of a purpose-built special school.
St. Teresa's is dedicated to the education of children with moderate, severe and profound special needs and Autism.
The school currently operates from the Ballinasloe Enterprise Centre.
The land has been secured from the HSE following a long campaign from school management and parents as the current school has been operating at capacity.
In April the school in Ballinasloe received the go-ahead for two emergency accommodation classrooms to cater for newly enrolled students.
