The issue of CPO's for greenways around the country has been causing lengthy delays and controversy in many areas around the country

Roscommon IFA Chairman Jim O' Connor says the new Code of Practice and Sustainability Payment for farmers on greenways will help the planned trail from Athlone to Galway.

A preferred route which stretches 180 kilometres from Athlone to Galway was published in recent weeks and a public consultation is being held until the end of January next on the plans.

Previous negotiations with farmers about the greenway ended in disarray when landowners felt they were being forced to give up their property.

Jim O' Connor says the new Code of Practice will include Voluntary Land Acquisition Agreements to avoid the use of CPO's.

He says a once-off goodwill payment for early sign-on and co-operation should help the greenway project this time out.
