It's hoped that construction will begin on a long awaited new 50 Bed unit at the Sacred Heart Hospital Roscommon in the coming months. The proposed ward has suffered a number of delays, with planning granted in February of last year. The plans include the demolition of 2 single storey accommodation units from the 1960s and the construction of the new two storey building. Also provided for in the application are 68 new car parking spaces in place of the existing 33 spaces, and 15 bicycle spaces.
An update provided to Councillor Tony Ward at this week's Western Regional Health Forum Meeting confirmed that the tender evaluation process has now reached a conclusion. Works are expected to begin next month with the process set to take 26 months. Councillor Ward says it's more important than ever to progress the provision of new care beds.
