Longford council is to consider incorporating dedicated horse riding trails into future plans for walkways and greenways around the county. The motion was adopted at a recent meeting of Ballymahon MD where two separate motions were discussed on the issue.
One motion from Councillor Pat O' Toole called for better signage to ensure horses aren't brought onto greenways, and the other from Councillor Gerard Farrell called for a dedicated trail to be incorporated into plans for amenities on the cutaway bogs.
All of the members of the Ballymahon MD agreed that greenways were not a safe area to bring horses and that the animals would also cause damage to the routes that have cost millions to develop.
It was also suggested however that many people have excerised horses and ridden along the canals for several years while the routes were closed and some alternatives need to be found for them now.
