The HSE is being called on to provide an additional ambulance base to serve the west Cavan and South Leitrim area.
The monthly meeting of Leitrim County council has heard that a patient could be left waiting for several hours for an ambulance if they require specialist medical treatment following an incident.
Councillor Ita Reynolds Flynn told the meeting that she was aware of someone waiting three-and-a half-hours for an ambulance and that people who require orthopedic treatment may often be transferred to Cavan or Drogheda hospital.
Currently, an ambulance is based in Carrick-on-Shannon, and the Fine Gael Councillor says it would be vital to serve the other areas of the county with paramedics and for emergencies
