The HSE's outgoing Chief Executive hopes the surge in Covid cases will drop in the coming weeks.
Sub variants of Omicron are driving the current rise in Coronavirus cases in Ireland.
Speaking to Shannonside news in Carrick on Shannon today at the official opening of the town's Primary Care Centre, Paul Reid says it's hoped Ireland may follow the experience of other countries which have come through a surge in cases:
It is rising, thankfully we are not seeing the same level of sickness in terms of critical care.
There are 33 people on ICU which has grown but it's not at the same levels we would have seen previoulsy. We would be hoping in the next 2-3 weeks we begin to plateau and see then we are at the peak.
We can't say that for certain but we would be calling on everyone to be diligent and to still wear your mark in appropriate settings and still be conscious in crowded settings. It's a highly transmissible virus and some people are very sick from it.
