It may be some time before a new Renal Dialysis unit will be provided at Sligo University Hospital.
In response to a query from Sligo Fianna Fail Councillor Donal Gilroy, the HSE says an Options Appraisal will be carried out in the first three months of 2021 to establish the future needs of RDU service and map that into a future development plan.
The current Sligo Unit opened in May 2005 for 30 patients and according to Councillor Gilroy it now caters for 59 Patients and is the oldest in the country.
The Hospital says while the assessment for a new unit is being carried out, the hospital has been increasing the number of patients treated on the twilight shifts.
It says it plans to have all twilight shifts operational in 2021, depending on staff
availability.
