The HSE has confirmed that it expects to seek tenders for the building of a new 50 bed unit at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon in the coming weeks.
The Assistant National Director of Buildings with the HSE has informed Independent Councillor Tony Ward that the office is considering expressions of interest in relation to the project and is finalising tender documentation.
The correspondence states that it's hoped that it can begin an evaluation process of tenders in late September 2020, and a successful design team can be appointed shortly after that.
It's hoped then that the project can progress substantially next year in terms of design with a view to planning being sought for the new unit.
HIQA has indicated that it would not renew registration for the facility if the new building was not in place by the end of next year.
While acknowledging that the progress is been extremely slow, Councillor Ward says he's relieved that at least it is happening.
Meanie, despite concerns raised by some families of the negative impact of the move, the HSE says it has reached agreement to move residents from from St Joseph's and Our Lady's Ward while significant fire safety upgrades are being carried out.
16 residents will be moved to St Brendan's Community Nursing Unit in Ballinasloe when the works start at the end of August, a number will be brought to Aras Mhathair Phol in Castlerea with two being cared for in home settings.
The works will last for 13 weeks and Councillor Ward says it will be temporary and there has been consultation:
