World Suicide day will be marked in the Shannonside Region today with the launch of a new online training programme to help people identify those in need of help.
302 people died by suicide in Ireland last year, with over half of all deaths by suicide globally, occurring before the age of 50.
'Let's Talk About Suicide' is a free online training programme provided by the HSE to help people identify others who might be at risk of suicide, confidently ask about suicide, keep them safe, and connect them with resources that can help.
The 60 minute course helps people build their confidence and knowledge to talk safely and sensitively about suicide and to feel prepared for such conversations if the notice a friend or family member is struggling.
The programme can be accessed at www.hse.ie/letstalk.
Emer Mulligan HSE Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention in Cavan/Monaghan spoke on the Joe Finnegan Show about the programme and you can listen here.
