The sin bin will be trialled in inter-county hurling this year after the experimental rule receiving 61% support, at the virtual Annual Congress today.
Motion 20 was passed meaning that a cynical foul in Gaelic football or hurling that is committed by the defending team inside the 20-metre line or semi-circle that prevents a goalscoring opportunity will result in a sin bin for the offending player and a penalty.
Limerick and London spoke in favour of a deferral of the motion until special congress but GAA president John Horan said “central council pushed for it to be on the Clár for today”.
Kilkenny and Westmeath spoke against the motion along with Galway and the GPA, but the motion was narrowly passed and into force on a trial basis for this year’s Allianz Leagues and Championship.
The splitting of the GAA season between inter-county and club by stipulating that the All-Ireland Senior Finals should be played on or before the 29th Sunday of the year. Was passed by acclaim.
The split season will come into effect formally in 2022.
The motion restricting county senior and intermediate championships to a maximum of 16 teams was passed.
Also passed The Post Primacy Schools All-Ireland Championships shall be completed by the weekend following St. Patrick's Day.
The Sigerson Cup Final shall be played by the seventh Sunday of the year and the Fitzgibbon Cup by the eighth Sunday of the year.
From now on joint winning captains will not be allowed collect the trophy. Only one captain can attend the trophy presentation.
Also confirmed was a special congress for later in 2021 to change the structure of the All-Ireland senior football championship.
Larry McCarthy officially took over from John Horan as GAA President at the end of congress.
