Dr Martin Daly, Fianna Fail's general election candidate for Roscommon-Galway, says he hopes Senator Eugene Murphy will stay in the party.
The Senator and former TD was unsuccessful at the party selection convention, losing out to Dr Daly.
Fianna Fail refused to add him to the ticket, so he won't be running alongside the Ballygar GP.
Senator Murphy has yet to rule out a possible run as an independent.
Dr Daly believes Eugene Murphy can retain his Seanad seat with support from the party.
However, party leader and Tanáiste Micheál Martin refused to confirm if that was his plan for the Scramoge man.
The Ballygar GP says while it's entirely up to Eugene Murphy to make the decision, it's his hope he'll stay with the party.
