"I had no firearm" man accused of Garda's murder tells court

A 43 year old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan.
Stephen Silver of Aughaward, Foxford, Mayo, appeared at a special sitting of Castlerea District Court tonight
There was a heavy Garda presence in the courtroom as Mr. Silver was charged with the murder of 49 year old Detective Colm Horkan.
The Garda lost his life following a violent incident in Castlerea on Wednesday night
The court heard the accused made no reply when charged tonight at Castlerea District court.
His solictor asked that all appropriate medical assessments be carried out.
Wearing a black top, black trousers and flip flops, the accused kept his head down for much of the court proceedings, but did exclaim towards the end of the appearance the word "unreal" and "I had no firearm."
He was remanded in custody by Judge Alan Mitchell to appear again at Harristown court via video link next Friday and legal aid was granted.
