The IFA is protesting outside two local secondary processors this morning in a call for price increases.
Farmers have placed themselves at the gates of four factories this morning, including at Carty Meats in Athlone and Connolly’s Pork and Bacon in Monaghan and
They are calling for a 30 cent per kilo increase in pig meat by the end of the month.
This would bring the price to €2 per kg, which according to a Teagasc report is 25 cent below the break-even mark.
IFA members have been in place since 6am and have said they’re prepared to remain there overnight or until a satisfactory outcome is reached.
