The IFA is urging farmers across the region to check if some of their land is being considered for rezoning under the Residential Zoned Land Tax scheme.
The scheme is a new tax aimed at increasing housing supply by activating zoned, serviced, residential development lands (including mixed-use lands) for housing.
All farmers with land on the outskirts of towns and villages are especially being encouraged to check whether their zoning is likely to change.
Land that is re-zoned will be subject to a new tax which will be handled by Revenue.
Rose Mary McDonagh who chairs the IFA Farm Business Committee says penalties for now compliance with the new scheme are severe.
She says farmers will be able to make an appeal, but the time period is short and they will need to gather a significant amount information.
