Rural pubs will once again bear the brunt of a planned increase in the cost of a pint according to a Longford publican.
Niamh Begley, from Begley's Pub in Killoe, say's rural pubs cannot not continue to absorb further price increases.
The rise will come in from mid-August with Diageo, which makes Guinness, Hop House 13 and Carlsberg, increasing costs by 4 cent per pint.
The Vintners Federation of Ireland has called it "deeply unfair" to consumers and publicans.
Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show today, Niamh says that while an 4 cent increase might seem small at first, it leads to major costs.
'It sounds like very little but if you look at the costs together, you're looking at an increase in €30 per keg.
Just for argument sake, if you get ten kegs a week, that's an increase of €300 for a small rural business to try an absorb.
We're at a huge, huge significant loss at that. I'm not sure how much more we can absorb with this new increase.
Electricity has gone up and gas. Food costs, everything across the board.'
