The birth rate in the Shannonside region has seen an increase compared to last year.
New figures from the CSO show 374 children were born from January to June in Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon.
192 boys and 182 girls were born in the region in the first half of 2022 according to the Central Statistics Office. This is an almost 4 percent rise in the local birthrate compared to the same time in 2021 where 364 children were born. Leitrim recorded the largest jump in the birth rate locally, with 101 children born in the six month period in 2022, compared to 76 the year before. Levels dropped in Roscommon where 160 children were born in the first half of 2021 compared to 148 by the same point this year. Meanwhile Longford births saw only minor fluctuations with 125 child born between January and June this year and 128 in the same period last year.
Nationally, the rate saw a major jump in 2022 compared to the previous year with 14,449 births recorded in the first half of the year, with 11,551 the year previous.
