The latest report from the Medical Bureau of Road Safety shows 177 motorists in the Shannonside region provided blood or urine samples to gardaí, an increase from 130 in 2020. Leitrim experienced an almost 50% increase in samples provided from 2020 to 2021, with 52 provided in 2021, up from 25 on the year previous. Roscommon had the most samples taken with 77, up from 61 in 2020, and Longford had 53 samples taken, up from 44.
Nationally, the youngest person caught driving while intoxicated was just 13 years of age, while the oldest was 95. 84% of offenders are under the age of 45.
One person was caught 8 times over the legal alcohol limit.
