Inmates levels at Castlerea Prison in Roscommon did not exceed bed capacity last year according to figures presented in the Dáil.
Despite a number of inmates sleeping on mattresses in cells at the Roscommon Prison over several months this year, the facility saw only 94 percent of beds occupied during the previous year.
In a Statement to Shannonside FM News, the Irish Prison Service confirmed there are currently 36 prisoners accommodated on mattresses on the floor of cells in Castlerea Prison.
According to Government figures, an average of 320 prisoners occupied the prison's 340 beds at any one time during the year.
Castlerea Prison has been identified as a priority location for capital works to expand the facility within the next 5 years.
