The installation of fibre optic cables for broadband has got underway in the areas surrounding Roscommon town.
Engineers are currently working in the areas of Ballymurray, Knockcroghery, Lecarrow, Athleague, Castlecoote, Donamon, Ballymacurley, Kilroosky and Four-Mile-House.
The work, being is carried for the rollout of the National Broadband Plan, includes cutting back hedges and laying fibre cable in ducting.
It's expected that broadband connections will be available to rural homes by the autumn, with pre-orders for connections being taken for connection to the super high-speed broadband network from September.
Work will also get underway in rural areas of Ballinasloe and Athlone and other parts of South Roscommon and Carrick-on-Shannon which will see the commencement taking place later in the year.
The next phase of the roll-out will include Castlerea, Elphin, Rooskey, Curraghboy, Cloonfad in West Roscommon and Newbridge, Co. Galway.
