The installation of a long awaited MRI scanner at Mullingar Hospital is set to be completed this week.
The work on the scanner began last month, with the hand over to hospital staff expected shortly.
The Ireland East Hospital Group has approved the recruitment of the Clinical Specialist Radiographer post for the new equipment.
The provision of the state of the art device to the hospital is the work of years of fundraising by the Friends of Mullingar Hospital group.
At present, the HSE is spending over 50,000 euro a year on taxi and transport costs bringing patients to other hospitals for MRI purposes.
It's expected the scanner will be operational in early Autumn.
