A new Intensive Care Unit extension has been opened at Sligo University Hospital.
The 4.6 million euro development will increase the hospital's critical care capacity from 6 to 8 beds, as well as its single-room facilities and critical care levels.
Four isolation rooms are included in the extension of the existing Intensive Care Unit.
The designated rooms will provide the capacity for airborne infections to be isolated in a single room that meets infection control standards.
Upgrades have also been made to ancillary facilities, including utility rooms and a staff base.
There is a new central nursing station in the extension, which is accessible from the existing ICU on level 8.
Additional staff will be hired, including nurses, medical, health, and social care professionals.
Hospital Manager Grainne McGann says the new building will improve patient outcomes by increasing the number of critical care beds available.
