The dioceses of Achonry and Elphin are likely to merge within the next two to four years, according to Bishop Kevin Doran.
It was announced six months ago the two dioceses, which both cover parts of Roscommon, would amalgamate.
Bishop Doran recently held six meetings with parishioners on the issue, including in Strokestown, Castlerea and Athlone.
