The number of involuntary admissions to hospitals for mental health checks has increased in the Shannonside region.
According to the annual report from the Mental Health Commission, each HSE area experienced an increase in admissions between 2020 and last year.
An involuntary admission occurs when a person is admitted to hospital against their will.
This type of admission can only happen if a person is not willing to go to hospital, is suffering from mental illness, an intellectual disability, or dementia, and there is also a risk of them causing harm to themselves or others.
According to the latest report from the Mental Health Commission, involuntary admissions increased in the Shannoside region between 2020 and 2022.
CHO8, which includes Longford and Westmeath, had the highest rate of admissions in the region at 290.
55 of those admissions were marked as voluntary initially but were then re-graded to involuntary.
This is followed by CHO2, which includes Roscommon, at 252 and then CHO1, which incorporates Leitrim, with 191.
It brings the total number of involuntary admissions in the region to 733, an increase on the 2020 figure of 676.
2,661 admissions were recorded last year, also up on the previous figure of 2,432.
