It's expected the levy will go ahead in a modified way in the finance bill.

The Chief Executive of a local rural development group believes Government must find an alternative to the concrete levy.

The 10% tax was announced in Budget 2023 to offset the cost of the mica redress scheme however it's likely this could add thousands to the cost of building a new home.

Seamus Boland from Irish Rural Link says it's extremely unfair on first time buyers and in his view young people aren't getting the break they deserve.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show the local chair stated Government should revisit the plan and find another way to raise the money for the redress scheme.

''It's extremely unfair to the young house buyer at the moment because every time they turn around something is putting up the price. It's unfortunate in my opinion that this is the only way we can raise it and it's a pity we don't have a system to punish the kind of stuff that allowed these houses to be built in such terrible quality. And I think we have to find a different way.''
