The utility is hoping to install solar panels among other measures at the water treatment site.

Irish Water is seeking to install a significant amount of new renewable energy infrastructure at a Roscommon water plant.

A planning application for ground and roof mounted solar panels has been made to Roscommon County Council for the Lough Garra Water Treatment Plant at Runnameelta.

The plans call for the photo voltaic panels to be distributed over grass areas, closed water tanks, and the flat roof of the plant building. A Natura Impact Statement has been submitted as a part of the application, with County planners due to make a decision in November.

Meanwhile, It's being reported that the government are to remove the requirement to apply to County Councils for permission to install panels in order to encourage more people to invest in solar energy. However, the new ruling will not be implemented for a number of months, with current applications for solar panels proceeding through the planning process as normal.
