Councillors in Longford have been told that Irish Water cannot give an estimated time for when a boil water notice will be lifted for large parts of the county.
The utility met with local councillors on Wednesday, seven days after a boil water notice affecting the Central water supply in the county was first implemented
Over 17,500 people across the county are currently under the notice after alarm were raised at the Newtownforbes water treatment plant last week that there was a possibility cryptosporidium may have entered the water system.
Councillor Martin Monaghan explained to the November meeting of Longford County Council that that the utility cannot give a timeline for the notice to be lifted because of ongoing works at the plant for the last 12 months and if they announced a date and missed it, it would be detrimental to everyone involved.
Frustration was expressed by several councillors as the lack of information being provided on the notice and works underway to resolve it.
