Irish young adults are the most likely in the European Union to struggle with foreign languages.
The finding comes from a recent report compiled by the European Commission, which showed that 18-24 year-olds in Ireland tend to rank their knowledge as 'basic.'
The report has sparked debates about whether the Irish education system is doing enough to promote foreign languages in primary and post-primary.
In Ireland, it is not compulsory for students to study a foreign language to complete their Leaving Certificate.
Leitrim-based language expert, Diletta Panero, believes making this mandatory would be greatly beneficial for students.
