An independent panel of experts is to examine the possibility of awarding social gallantry medals to the remaining survivors of the siege of Jadotville.
The Minister for Defence Simon Coveney confirmed that a special panel will report by next spring on whether a gallantry medal can be presented to men who were originally recommended for the army's highest honour in 1961.
After a long campaign by the remaining eight soldiers, Simon Coveney told the Seanad the independent group will "examine the entire case, including new evidence if any is available".
