History has been made at Roscommon County Council with the election of Joe murphy as the new Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council.
The Strokestown-based postman succeeds Councillor Laurence Fallon as the head of the Council. He was proposed this afternoon at the local Authority's AGM by Councillor John Cummins and was seconded by Councillor Tom Crosby.
His election means it is the first time that two brothers have held the title of Cathaoirleach or chair of the County Council in Roscommon - with the married father of two following in the footsteps of his brother, Senator Eugene Murphy, who previously held the position when he was a local representative.
Councillor Orla Leyden was also elected as leas Cathaoirleach.
Councillors Nigel Dineen and Donal Kilduff also contested for roles at today's AGM but were unsuccessful.
