Just a quarter of June's local election candidates are women. 54 local council seats are up for grabs in next months election in the Shannonside Region.
109 candidates and sitting councillors are in the running for those seats with a number of long standing representatives standing down from the race this year. Of the 109 candidates locally just 28 are women in the region.
Longford and Roscommon both have a candidate pool of 37 with both Council's featuring a number of empty seats come June. Leitrim has 35 candidates seeking election, with several long standing Councillors also not contesting this time around.
Independents out number the political parties with 25 candidates identifying themselves as non-party. That's followed by Fianna Fail with 23 members seeking election and Fine Gael with 21 candidates.
Sinn Fein has fielded 16 people across the nine local electoral areas, while the Greens are hoping for seats for five of their candidates. The smaller parties are mostly all represented in the region, with the fledgling Independent Ireland Party putting forward three to the local elections and both the Irish Freedom Party and The Irish People Party nominating two each.
Labour, People Before Profit and the Social Democrats have selected one candidate a piece in the region.
