The ESB is being criticised for advertising contractors to demolish the Lough Ree power station.

The Lanesboro facility, which is currently offline- is due to be decommissioned fully by the end of this year as part of plans revealed in late 2019.

Earlier this year, Just Transition commissioner Kieran Mulvey outlined that he hoped the iconic Longford power station, and its sister facility in Shannonbridge, might be retained for future projects

The ESB previously confirmed to Shannonside Northern Sound that the current planning permissions for the West Offaly and Lough Ree Power sites includes an obligation to decommission the power plant and remediate the sites by the end of 2022.

It went on to say that prior to any development opportunity taking place, ESB must satisfy the legal obligation to remediate the existing sites.

Independent Councillor Mark Casey is asking the ESB to hold off on the plans to allow people to examine the possibility of some other use for the buildings:
