The closure today follows a similar event in Shannon Bridge on this day last week when that peat burning station was also closed down.

The death knell for the closure of both Lough Ree power in Lanesboro and the Shannon bridge station in Offaly came in November of last year when the ESB failed to get permission to convert both stations to biomass.

The announcement this time last year that the station in Lanesboro would be closing several years earlier than originally planned came as a shock and blow to the local community who've been left wondering what is going to happen in the coming years.

While the Just Transition Deal is to bring a few million euro investments to separate tourist-related projects in the area, and Bord na Mona promising jobs for whoever wants them in bog rehabilitation, there's still a fear that today will mark the end of a way and quality of life that won't be seen again.
