New energy infrastructure developments planned at the site of the former Lough Ree power station in Lanesboro must progress through Longford County Council.
That's the ruling from An Bord Pleanála today over plans for a proposed Battery Energy Storage System and Synchronous Condensor at the site along the Shannon.
Following an application by the ESB to consider the development as strategic infrastructure, the higher planning body ruled that the plan does not meet the criteria.
Strategic infrastructure planning bypasses the local authority and is decided directly by An Bord Pleanála.
To progress plans, ESB will now be required to apply to Longford county planners in the first instance.
