The ESB says it is developing plans to use cutting edge technologies at its sites in Lanesboro and Shannonbridge.
A press release issued today repeats that no viable alternative uses have been found for the existing power stations and equipment and they still intend to demolish them.
The ESB says that following a comprehensive feasibility study in recent months the Lanesboro and Shannonbridge sites have been found to have potential for providing services to facilitate the growth of renewable electricity generation.
It says planning applications are now being developed for both station sites as renewable energy centres.
The proposed technology includes synchronous condensers which are used to regulate voltage on long transition lines , and energy storage capabilities.
