Longford recruiter says local students are leaving school without the skills they need to apply for apprenticeships.
That's according to a recruitment manager of a Lanesborough based business who has been having a hard time attracting young adults into the electrical industry.
According to CSO figures from 2016, the number of construction apprentices there were qualified were down from 48.6% since 2010.
Speaking to the Joe Finnegan show, Greg Cassidy says apprenticeships have been challenging to sell in schools due to an ongoing lack of skill preparation:
'I personally contacted six local schools within the county regions. I got a response from one.
I just feel there is such a gap there in the young people being recruited.
We took on so many young lads last year and they were so unprepared. I was communicating with them from May to maybeOctober before they could actually get themselves in the position to start. They didn't have a Safe Pass organised. I was telling them this stuff as they were asking for the job.'
