Today's Census figures also show a large proportion of houses vacant in the North West region have been unused since 2016.
Deirdre Lynch from the Central Statistics Office says that when they looked closer at the houses vacant in the previous census they found a large number in counties like Roscommon and Leitrim.
She says they also discovered that another half of the houses involved were also deemed to be vacant in 2011.
