The Credit Unions are the latest financial institutions to be targeted by the fraudsters

Roscommon Credit Union Manager Bernie Moran is urging members not to be taken-in by fraudulent texts.

The texts have been circulating since last week to credit union members all across the country.

The scam involves a fraudster sending a text message or making a phone call claiming to be from a credit union and informing the recipient that their credit union account has been "put on hold or locked".

Members are asked to click on a particular link and enter their private details in order for the problem to be sorted out.

The fraudsters then have access to the persons account and can withdraw money from it.

The Roscommon Credit Union manager says a lot of people in this region seems to have been getting the texts over the past weekend.

'We just have seen in the last number of days, and particularly over the weekend, a big surge on members in the Roscommon area receiving those text messages.

We've been lucky so far that members have reported it to us and that we're able to say " that is not from the credit union, don't touch it".

The particular text that's doing the rounds at the moment is saying "your credit union account has been put on hold for our new security update, please verify your account at this link".

We're just trying to create awareness that those texts are fraudulent , and not to go near them, just delete them and get rid of them.'
