There has been a 50% reduction in the number of horses seized by local authorities in the Shannonside region this year.
Under the Control of Horses Act 1996, any Horse that is kept in a so called "control area", an area designated by a local authority, must be licensed.
Local authorities have the power to seize horses that breach this rule.
According to the latest Oireachtas figures, the number of horses seized by local authorities in Longford, Leitrim, and Roscommon has almost halved in the space of a year.
There have been 13 horses seized in the Shannonside region in 2022 to date, 6 in Longford, 7 in Leitrim, and none in Roscommon.
This compares to a 2021 figure of 24 horses, 22 in Longford, 2 in Leitrim, and none in Roscommon.
The total number of horses seized nationally for breach of the Control Of Horses Act so far this year is 197, down from the 2021 figure of 477.
