The most recently completed stretch of the Dublin to Galway greenway will be officially opened in Athlone early next month.
Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton will also preside over the sod turning for the building of the new pedestrian bridge in the town on the same day.
The ceremony will be held at Athlone Marina on the 4th of October.
The greenway presently finishes at the White Gates on the Ballymahon road in Athlone, but the new stretch brings cyclists and pedestrians safely into the heart of the town ending at the town Marina.
It's hoped that the new bridge will take around 18months to build and that it can be opened in the first half of 2023.
The project will also include a new boardwalk along the Shannon to bring greenway users down to a finishing point at Athlone Castle.
