A Leitrim based building company says the proposed new concrete levy announced in the budget last month could yet pose significant problems.
Brian McKiernan who's Group Commercial Director for King and Moffatt Building Services says the company doesn't deal directly in concrete but it's likely to have an impact on projects they're involved in.
King and Moffatt have delivered huge projects in Ireland and the UK over the last number of years including Center Parcs in Ballymahon, and are currently involved in a huge warehouse project in Luton which will be five times the size of Croke Park.
Brian McKiernan says the 10% levy will present a real challenge on top of all the other inflation increases in recent times but it remains to be seen how much of an issue it will become:
"Well obviously it's going to affect us indirectly, like some of the projects we would be looking at would have huge, vast sums of concrete in them and if they become unviable, well it's going to have a direct impact then on our business. The 10% tax is going to affect all concrete products, it's not just concrete; it's blocks, mortar, precast products. So that's going to be considerable then when you ramp that up to a commercial building. It could become a big problem."
