A Professor of Politics is suggesting that Leitrim could benefit from merging with counties like Cavan and Monaghan.
Eoin O'Malley says that the current boundaries between counties were drawn up by England and are now outdated.
In an article in the Irish Independent, the DCU Professor theorises that merging smaller councils with larger ones would allow for better services for small counties and a more competitive GAA championship.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show, Professor O'Malley says that areas like Leitrim could be one of the beneficiaries of a merger with a larger county.
"You have somewhere like Leitrim County Council which is very small and probably, because its so small, and has a population base that's very small, it can't provide certain services than say a bigger administrative area would regularly provide. This means it might be time now to rethink whether the county boundaries are the way in which we should adminster local services for instance or even to elect our TD's at".
