Leitrim County Council have agreed to contact the National Parks and Wildlife Service over the spread of wild deer in the county. At this morning's meeting of the Carrick on Shannon Municipal District, Councillor Paddy Farrell highlighted the concerns of farmers and motorists over the impact of deer in Leitrim. He stated the animals are causing car accidents, destroying farmland and damaging property, branding the issue a ‘pandemic’.
With the support of councillors in the MD, it was decided that Leitrim County Council would contact the NPWS and call for a cull of the animals in the North West. Speaking to Shannonside FM News, Councillor Farrell says action must be taken urgently:
