The Chief Executive of Leitrim County Council says it's hoped up to 500 more jobs could be brought to the former MBNA site in Carrick-on-Shannon.
Lar Power was speaking following the announcement today that the Council will get just over €7.2 million euro to help them buy the site and develop it as an enterprise campus.
The council plans to sustain the existing anchor tenant of 200 jobs, and to refurbish other buildings to a high quality for use by small to medium enterprises. A three-year marketing and development programme to secure larger indigenous clients and Foreign Direct Investment clients is also planned. Speaking on the Let's Talk this afternoon the Leitrim Council CEO says the project has the potential to have a total economic impact to the region of €65 million:
"We think there is significant potential for this workspace as an economic generator for the county and the wider region. We'd intend to turn it into a state-of-the-art facility and make it really fit for the purpose of the buildings that today's enterprise and industry needs. I would see it as a landing space or a second office opportunity for the likes of FDI or we'd see it as an attractive location for indigenous too. If we could get the jobs from 200 to up to around 700 over time we think it would be worth €65m per annum to the local economy."
