It’s hoped a proposed carpooling scheme in Leitrim will create a sustainable transport option for the county.
The initiative will be rolled out by the local authority following approval from the Department of Transport as a pathfinder project.
Leitrim County Council will pilot the initiative among its 250 staff members and Project Development Officer Aine Carr hopes the scheme can be extended to other large employers in the county.
Funding will now be sought for the procurement of a software that will match up employees who travel the same route to work.
Aine believes it will have a positive impact on carbon emissions.
'The other good part about the car-pooling software is it works out the savings that you make in relation to carbon emissions, so we'll be able to quantify the savings that people are making.
We're going to take a leadership role on this, procuring the software , implementing it, and education and awareness measures with staff.
We will be working and engaging with the larger employers in Co Leitrim'
